The Tennessee Titans are a professional American football team based in Nashville, Tennessee. The Titans compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division. Previously known as the Houston Oilers, the team began play in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). The Oilers won two AFL championships before joining the NFL as part of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. The franchise has had its ups and downs since joining the NFL, but they achieved great success during their first decade following their move to Nashville.
During that time, they made five playoff appearances and reached Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000, where they lost on a last-second field goal attempt by St. Louis Rams kicker Mike Jones. They also won four consecutive AFC South titles from 2002 through 2005 under head coach Jeff Fisher, making them one of only three teams to win four consecutive division titles since realignment in 2002. In 2018, after nine years without making playoffs or having a winning season, quarterback Marcus Mariota led them back to relevance with an improbable 9-7 season and wild card berth – their first playoff appearance since 2008. While they were defeated by eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots 20-13 at Gillette Stadium that year, it marked an important turning point for this storied organization and showed fans what was possible with Mariota leading the charge.
Since 2018’s playoff run though, things have been much quieter for this team which is now led by head coach Mike Vrabel who came over from Houston Texans to take control after firing former head coach Mike Mularkey who had taken them to playoffs but failed to get any further progress out of his squad during his tenure there from 2016-2018 . Despite not reaching playoffs again yet under Vrabel’s watch he has slowly started rebuilding with young talent such as 2020 draft pick Isaiah Wilson at RT position who is expected bring stability on offensive line which was main concern past few seasons . Offensively Derrick Henry is undisputed leader rushing attack while A J Brown & Corey Davis form dynamic WR duo , all three players should continue being major parts offense future success depends largely on how well QB Ryan Tannehill can manage game despite some struggles he proved be capable leading offense when needed most times so far throughout his brief career Titans .
Defensively coordinator Dean Pees has done remarkable job building unit around stars like Jurrell Casey & Logan Ryan while incorporating new additions like Vic Beasley Jr & Malcolm Butler both brought veteran presence secondary gave team more confidence against passing attacks opposing offenses often use against them , overall defense has improved greatly since Pees took over 2019 served solid base going forward into 2021 season hopefully ending long drought without playoff wins for city Nashville . Overall this team remains competitive due strong leadership from front office along with coaching staff who continue develop younger talent help make sure Titans stay competitive even toughest divisions NFL today .
