The New Orleans Saints, commonly referred to as the “Saints” are an American professional football team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Saints compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) South division. Established in 1967 and originally known as the expansion New Orleans Saints, and based in Tulane Stadium until 1975, the franchise was founded by John W. Mecom Jr., David Dixon, and Bubba Phillips. The Saints began play at Tulane Stadium on September 17th 1967 against their first opponent, the Los Angeles Rams. This game ended with a 24-13 victory for the Rams; however this does not mark the beginning of their successful career.
Under head coach Jim Mora Sr., they made it to 4 consecutive playoff appearances from 1987-1990, however it wasn’t until 2006 when they made their first Super Bowl appearance after defeating an NFC rival Philadelphia Eagles 27-24 during overtime of what is now called “the river city miracle.” The following year was even more memorable for fans after winning Super Bowl XLIV against Indianapolis Colts 31-17 which marked their very first championship win since joining NFL back in 1967. Led by current quarterback Drew Brees who has been with them since 2006 season and has had 10 pro bowl selections along with many other accolades that include being named MVP at 2010 Pro Bowl and Offensive Player of Year Award in 2008.
Tthey have gone on to become one of most successful teams in NFL history over past decade making playoffs 8 out of 11 seasons while also having several successful seasons including 2013 where they went 13-3 but lost heartbreakingly close divisional round game to eventual champion Seattle Seahawks 23-15 after leading majority of contest up until last few minutes left on clock. Most recently under head coach Sean Payton who has been with them since 2006 season along with key players like Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas and Marshon Lattimore all three offensive rookies from 2017 draft class, who have earned multiple awards between each other such as Offensive Rookie Of Year Award for both Thomas & Kamara respectively along side Defensive Rookie Of Year award going towards Lattimore – They have continued their success having won NFC South title three years straight 2017–2019 while also making deep run into playoffs 2019 season only losing out championship game vs Kansas City Chiefs 31–20 due lack offensive production late second half/overtime period Overall throughout this impressive tenure under Payton & Brees we can expect nothing less than continued success coming out Crescent City especially given recent talent influx through free agency/drafts combined experienced veterans already present within organization which should make any opposing team tremble when lines drawn come crunch time!
